This entry was the result of the Apparel Design through Flat Pattern course final project. The inspiration came from images of the city of Santorini in Greece. The buildings in this city are very close together, some roofs overlapping, have rectangular shapes and are painted in happy, mostly primary bright colors. Also, the ocean proximity, the blue color of the water, fading from darker to lighter, provided the needed depth for the color story as well as the reference for color blocking design technique. The idea of a 3-D pocket was incorporated for added functionality, given the mirror like sun effects on Santorini. The challenge was to create a structured over garment inspired by such a destination, rather than a casual look. The choice of silk satin added formality to the patchwork pattern, while also bringing in construction challenges and plenty of problem solving opportunities. This design was accepted for 2016 Internatonal Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Design Exhibition in Vancouver, British Columbia.
